Born at home on May 15, 1924, to Otmar Edward and Verna Emma (Beumer) Oberdick in Matson, Missouri, Rubelle was raised on the family farm. She served as a Marine in World War ll, stationed in Washington, DC. It was during the war that she met the love of her life, her husband of almost 77 years, Richard (Dick) Francis Shields. Rubelle’s grandchildren remember their adventures with her on camping trips, the blankets she crocheted for them, the Christmas ornaments she crafted, her meatloaf sandwiches, cookies, tomato cake, scones (with the raisins cut in half), and her famous Bruce pie. When Dick and Rubelle retired, they spent many years as winter Texans, and traveled the country in their travel trailer.
