 October 2, 1930 ~ February 18, 2024

Frederick Lawrence “Larry” Young, 93, of Independence, MO, passed away February 18, 2024, at home with family at his side.

Larry was born October 2, 1930, in Kansas City, MO, one of three children of Frederick Lucius and Bernice (Fox) Young. Along with his parents, Larry was preceded in death by his siblings, Clifford Young and Shirley Wolff.

Larry graduated from Raytown High School in 1948 and served active duty in the US Navy for one year. Larry’s service to his country would later continue for twelve years in the Navy Reserves and nine years in the Air Force Reserves, retiring in 1990.

Larry was united in marriage to Martha “Marty” Herriman on November 16, 1951, in Raytown, MO, and they were blessed with two children, Craig and Donna.

Larry’s career as an Agent with Allstate Insurance Company spanned 33 years. After retiring from Allstate, he worked as a lineman at the Lee’s Summit Airport for 15 years and retired at 87 years young. Airplanes and flying were his lifelong passions. He held a pilot’s license for 50 years, clocked 1500 hours as a pilot, and built three airplanes. He was instrumental in organizing air shows each year in June.

Larry enjoyed Square Dance calling and was a member of the Kansas City Callers Association for 21 years.

Larry was active in his community. He was a Mason, a member of Ararat Shrine Temple, and flew its Wings of Mercy 206 Cessna. He was also a member of American Legion Post 21, the Missouri Pilots’ Association, and the Experimental Aircraft Association, EAA Chapter 91, Quiet Birdman. He served as President of Chapter 91 for 25 years. Larry was a member of the Church of the Resurrection in Overland Park, KS.

Survivors include his wife of 72 years, Martha “Marty” Young; children, Craig Young (Shaun) and Donna Hankins (Scott Kormann); grandsons, Steve Hankins (Kim) and Jeff Hankins; great grandchildren, Christian and Ava; as well as numerous amazing nieces, nephews, other family members and many wonderful friends.

On Saturday, March 2, a visitation will be held from 12-1:30 pm at Lee’s Summit Christian Church, 800 NE Tudor Road, Lee’s Summit, MO, followed by a service at 1:30 celebrating Larry’s life, including military honors. A flyover will conclude, weather permitting.

In lieu of flowers, memorials are suggested to the EAA Chapter 91 for the Young Eagles Program, 2750 NE Douglas Street, Lee’s Summit, MO 64064. You may share a message with the family or sign an online guest book via www.parklawnfunerals.com. Arrangements: Park Lawn Funeral Home 816.523.1234.
